When was the last time a Polish Catholic could gaze across the street at his exotic neighbor?  When was the last time before this weekend that Polish nostrils in Pinczow inhaled the hypnotic aroma of a Szabbat cholent hot from the oven of the piekarnia up the street?  Or that the sounds of Szalom Aleichem, Eyshet Chayil and Kiddush vibrated off the Sabbath tables, out the open windows and into the streets of Pinczow?

Now I am on my way to a most remarkable three-day observance which has been one year in the making: Szabbat Pinczow  -  perhaps the first time since the Shoah that the trees of Pinczow have given shade to Jews enjoying a Saturday afternoon stroll, or that the streets of Pinczow have felt the press of Jewish feet as  worshippers make their way to Shul and to a hot lunch, or that the darkness of a Pinczow night was pierced by the spectacular beauty of twin Szabbat candles glowing, cursing the darkness, and blessing us all.
