The broken candles tipped downwards are the symbol of death, of the light of life being extinguished. The eagle, king of the birds, is a symbol of strength and power, and parallel in the depiction of a woman to a lion. The drapery indicates sorrow and mourning. Here lies. A God-fearing woman is praiseworthy, surely she is the important modest woman, tender in years, Ms. Golda Serl daughter of our teacher and rabbi Mordechai May his light shine, died 26 Kislev 5648 [12 December 1887]. May her soul be bound in the bond of everlasting life. Translated by (smages@comcast.net)
