Reb Mordechai Menachem of blessed memory Zumerfeld a community leader from here. An acrostic poem spelling the name of the deceased Mordechai Menachem. [The first row is unclear]… our father’s soul, the head of our family is quietly laying in the ground….the tears ended in our eyes, the elders of our city returned to the earth, who will put up a fence – who will stop the gap? who will protect him from destruction? our faces are parched, wrinkled from crying, Menachem the consoler of our souls left us to our sighs. Here lies a man, God-fearing, senior and righteous, famous for his immense deeds, for the benefit of one and all, was engaged in the Torah and the commandments and gave his soul for the existence of the Yeshivot [Rabbinical colleges], dedicated his soul, his home was a meeting place for the sages. Our teacher and rabbi Rabbi Mordechai Menachem of blessed memory son of the righteous rabbi Rabbi Moshe Meir May the memory of the righteous be of a blessing from ? great-grandson of the great rabbi from ? May the memory of the righteous be of a blessing in the world to come, died with a good name at the age of 62 years on 5 Elul to the Section "Kaper L'amcha Yisrael" [Grant Atonement to Your Nation Israel] in the year 5697 [12 August 1937] May his soul be bound in the bond of everlasting life Translated by Sara Mages (smages@comcast.net)
